Update your home by painting your vinyl shutters

Many people who have shutters that are getting a bit old and faded but still work well wonder if painting vinyl shutters is an option.  Well, the answer is yes and we will tell you how.  Step one, make sure to wash them well with a detergent that contains bleach or mildew killer.  When painting vinyl shutters, they have to be clean.  Once dry, gently sand them with 120 grit paper.

The sanding will help the paint adhere better.  We recommend that your finish coat be an exterior latex paint when painting vinyl shutters.  We also recommend you use a primer first if you don’t mind the extra work.  This will help with the paint adhering better to the slats.  You also may consider tinting the primer to closely match your final color.  This will provide a full, color finish.

If you are painting vinyl shutters that are on the exterior of your home, we recommend you take them down when painting.  They are difficult to clean properly as well as paint and not have drip marks when they are still on the side of the house.  Remember, this is a big job so plan your time accordingly and enjoy!
